Our eye exams are bulk billed to Medicare and include retinal photography, conducted by a highly qualified, experienced and therapeutically endorsed optometrist.
We use only the latest and high-quality lens design (link to lens video). With our onsite manufacturing and repairs capability, Nova Optical is the perfect place for all your optical needs.

Michael Wilkins – Owner & Optical Dispenser
Michael started his optical career with OPSM in 1976 and completed the Optical Dispensing course in 1978 at Sydney Technical College. As a licensed Optical Dispenser Michael worked at various OPSM branches gaining experience from other expert opticians. 93 Michael opened his own Budget Eyewear franchise in Lismore, quickly establishing the business amidst plenty of competition.
The business became so successful that Michael won franchisee of the year in 1999. He opened a second Budget Eyewear outlet in Ballina which quickly became a popular place to purchase eyewear in the area. The two practices were sold in 2003.
Michael then worked for privately owned optical outlets on the Gold Coast. He joined Big W Optical in 2007. There, he was responsible for opening several new outlets, training branch optical managers and optical staff. He then managed the Big W Auburn branch and optical lab, servicing all NSW Big W optical branches.
In 2013 he moved to Healthy Eyes in Charlestown, where he remained until RT Health closed the practice in March 2020. Michael subsequently purchased the business and re-opened as Nova Optical in October 2020.
Michael’s experience in the optical industry is second to none. Michael is an expert in eyewear styling and knows what frames suit each individual, matching frames to face shape and selecting colours that complement the wearer. As an optical mechanic, Michael can also manufacture, fit and repair your specs.
So, when it comes to eyewear styling, knowledge in technically advanced lenses, manufacturing and repairs, there is no one more qualified and experienced than Michael.
Jenna Owen
B.Optom (Hons) B.Sc (Vis Sci)
Jenna was born and raised in central NSW about 150km west of Dubbo. She graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2010, becoming the first indigenous optometrist in NSW and only the second in Australia. She began practicing on the mid north coast, consulting in several regional practices and developed an interest and experience in the diagnosis and management of eye disease.
Jenna moved to Newcastle in 2013 and started practicing in Charlestown. She is now kept busy outside of work with three young children, but still enjoying optometry and is passionate about providing quality eye care to both her longstanding and new patients alike.
